Russian language

Today we are going to talk about some features in russian language.

The unique word with 3 same letters in a row in russian is "длиношеее" - adjective, long-neck(ed).
Example: "Жираф - длиношеее животное" (Giraffe is a long-neck animal).

"ться" or "тся"?

If you confused by question how to right end of the verbs "тся" or "ться", here is a simple rule: ask a question to the verb and look at the verb in the question, then take the end of the word the same as in the question.
Example: "Иван сражается против кроликов" or "Иван сражаетЬся против кроликов"?
The question is "Что делает Иван?" (сражается), the verb "делает" is without letter "ь", so the answer is "Иван сражается против кроликов".

Example: "Хочешь повеселится?" or "Хочешь повеселиться?" ? And now the question is "Что хочешь сделать?" (повеселиться), the verb "сделать" has letter "ь", so the answer is "Хочешь повеселиться?".

Example: "Дети начали смеятся" or "Дети начали смеяться". You can use short question right to the examined verb "Что делать?", so the answer is "сметься".

Ask right question and you never be wrong.

The letter "Ё" was offered to use by princess Voroncova-Dashkova (the president of Academy of Sciences) in 1783. Before that moment the sound "ё" was written as "io".
After the revolution in 1917 appeared a rule that you can write "ё" as "е". The problem appeared in WW2 in 1942 when Stalin ordered to return "ё" as a letter in maps because of confusion with names of human settlements, thus there was a problem with "Берёзино" and "Березино".

After more than 200 years of existence the letter "ё" now is officially equal to "е". However there are lots of word with different pronunciations.
(Let us destroy Берёзено!)
(WTF? Березено is destroyed!)

What is the problem you can say? The pronunciation!
"Ё" is similar to the sound "yo", "е" is similar to the english "ye" (like in the word yet). And now you can write "е" instead of "ё".

The words you can meet:
"Елка" - firtree (the pronunciation "yelka"), however you have to read it as "yolka" because the root word is "ёлка";
"мое" -my, you should read as "moyo" (моё), not as "moye";
"твердый" - hard, is read as "tvyordyi" (твёрдый).

What to do with that nobody knows.

Besides the problem for language learners there are many problems with documents. Officially there 12500 surnames in Russia with the letter "ё". You can find in internet some funny stories when people can not prove that their children with surname with (or without) ё are actually their children, because documents are not the same when there is any difference in surname.

In 2005 in Ulyanovsk city the monument "Ё" was unveiled.

Also "ё" has the cutest place in a russian keyboard :)
